Certificate of Safety Training AMSA Approved – Brisbane

The STCW 10 replaces the old STCW 95

The STCW 10 or STCW 95 is a certificate of sea safety training and the minimum requirement for anyone who would like to work on vessels all around the world. Students will learn all the safety requirements on board a vessel. You will learn all about Social Responsibility, Fighting fires on board, Survival Techniques and Security. This course runs for 8 consecutive days and attendance is mandatory as per the International Maritime Organisation.

STCW 10

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities

MARF006 Observe personal safety and social responsibility is similar to the IMO module listed above.
The subject and content are based on the IMO Model Course 1.21 Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR).

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting

(STCW RegVI/1 and Code Section A-V1/1, Table A-VI/1-2)
MARF008 Prevent and fight fires on board a vessel is similar to the IMO module listed above.
This subject aims to provide the training for candidates in fire prevention and fire fighting in accordance with Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code.

Personal Survival Techniques

(STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-V1/1, Table A-VI/1-1)
MARF009 Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment is similar to the IMO module listed above.

Security Awareness Training

Elements of Shipboard Safety Brisbane

Elements of Shipboard Safety or more commonly known as ESS.

Elements of Shipboard Safety

Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS) is the first sea safety certificate to work on commercial vessels located in Australia. These four subjects are also prerequisites for all commercial qualifications up to (and including) Master Class 4. Any crew on/or pursuing  a maritime career on commercial vessels will be required to complete this course within 6 months of working onboard a commercial vessel in Australia.

During classroom workshops and practical demonstrations this course will aim to develop an awareness of:

  • workplace health and safety issues in the maritime industry
  • an ability to cope efficiently and effectively with emergency situations on board
  • practical training in the use of life-jackets and life-rafts,
  • fire fighting
  • flare activation

Career Opportunities   

This course could offer you the opportunity of securing a Deckhand on commercial fishing / trading vessels and/or entrance into traineeships. This qualification could lead to other career opportunities within the Maritime Industry as a Master, Coxswain or a Marine Engine Driver on commercial ships.

Requirements for the days of training are the following:

  • Boots/covered in shoes (Day 1 & 2)
  • Sun protection (Day 1 & 2)
  • Swimmers  (Day 1)

  • Long sleeved shirt & trousers (Day 1 & 2)
  • Change of clothes  (Day 1)

To complete the practical assessments throughout the course you will be required to swim, extinguish fires, visit a commercially registered vessel and activate a hand held flare. Please let us know if you have any issues with any of these practical components of the course.

  • An appropriate radio certificate of proficiency,
  • Successful completion of an AMSA final assessment,
  • An AMSA approved first aid certificate.

Anyone seeking licences should double check with AMSA as per requirements to convert your college certificate to a licence.

Mate less than 80M NC

This course meets the requirements as a Mate less than 80M NC as per the NSCV Part D.  In addition to achieving the MAR40613 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations you will need the following;

    • qualifying sea service and/or
    • completed AMSA approved task book
    • an appropriate radio certificate of proficiency,
    • AMSA final assessment and an
    • AMSA approved first aid certificate

Again anyone who wishes to apply for their Mate <80M should make contact with their local AMSA office to discuss their situation. It is possible to hold your Master 5 and your Mate 80M creating better job opportunities.

Qualification Description

The Master 24M commonly known as Master 5 applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)
certificate of competency in the capacity of:

  • master on commercial vessels up to 24 m in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or
  • chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels up to 35 m in length within the EEZ or
  • chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels up to 80 m in length in inshore waters.

Licensing/Regulatory Information

This qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certificate of competency as a Master <24 metres NC as defined in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.

AMSA certification of competency will require:

  • achieving MAR30918 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master <24 m Near Coastal)
  • a Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency
  • sea service consisting of:
  • 120 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA approved task book

or

  • 600 days qualifying sea service
  • meeting the medical and eyesight requirements specified in the NSCV Part D and
  • assessment by an AMSA approved assessor using the AMSA mandated practical assessment (AMPA) conducted on a commercial vessel ≥7.5 m in length.

PRE-REQUISITES TO RECEIVING YOUR CERTIFICATE

The following documentation will need to be provided by the student before being issued their certificate.

• Elements of Shipboard of Safety
• A copy of a current first aid certificate
• A copy of a Marine Radio license
• A completed task book or a copy of their approved sea time document

All the pre-requisites will be required to be on file before a student is issued a certificate.

Australia has changed from the state-based certification to a National Certification. The previous certifications Master Class 5, Skipper Grade 3, Master Class5/Skipper Grade 3, Master Class V (Trading), Master Class V (Fishing) and Master Class 5 (Trading and Fishing) now all come under the Master under 24 m NC national system.

Every commercial vessel licensed to operate in Australian waters needs the ‘skipper’ or person in charge to hold a Certificate of Competency issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority

The Master up to 24 m NC course at ECA Maritime College provides the required theory and practical training to complete all the units for the Maritime Training Package achieving MAR30918 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master <24 m Near Coastal)

After training, candidates must sit an oral examination with a National Regulator approved examiner to complete the Certificate of Competency.

Danial Thain’s maiden voyage at ECA Maritime College

We have recently purchased our own training vessel called the Danial Thain. This was our maiden voyage for the new asset to ECA Maritime College and we hope our Master 4 and Master 5 students enjoyed their course and time with ECA Maritime College.
