General Purpose Hand

This certificate of competency lets you work as a deck and/or engine room hand on a vessel.

The General Purpose Hand near coastal will allow you to, assist with deck or engine work on vessels up to 100m long or 3000 GT, in the Australian exclusive economic zone, under the general supervision of the master, chief engineer, or delegated crew member.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a General Purpose Hand near coastal certificate you must:

be at least 16 years old on the certificate issue date
be able to speak and understand English, including written documents
Be medically fit for the duties, including eyesight
Complete training
Gain any needed sea service

Description

Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS) training is for people who wish to work on commercial vessels in Australian waters. The following units of competency are required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

    • MARF027 – Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
    • MARF028 – Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires onboard a vessel
    • MARF029 – Meet work health and safety requirements
    • MARF030 – Survive at sea using survival craft

DURATION

A minimum of 8 hours of online training and theory component must be completed before attendance is allowed.

You must attend a practical day after completing all the online theory components. The practical day will start at Scarborough Marina – Coast Guard Building at 0800. During your practical day, you will need to complete a written exam on the content you have covered here.

ELEMENTS OF SHIPBOARD SAFETY CERTIFICATE ESS COURSE STRUCTURE

Practical Training Day – First part of the day will be firefighting, flare demonstrations, and onboard a vessel to see all the safety components of a commercially registered vessel. With the second half of the day in the swimming pool, bring a change of clothes as you must be fully clothed for the pool activity.

Please wear a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, and enclosed shoes.

To complete the practical assessments, you will be required to swim, extinguish fires, visit a commercially registered vessel and activate a handheld flare. Please let us know if you have any issues with these practical components of the course.

MED 2 – Marine Engine Driver Grade 2

Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 - MED 2

The MED 2 or Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 is suitable for people who work in the maritime industry operating as

  • Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 750 kW
    and/or
  • Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1500 kW

This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency in the capacity of:

  • chief engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <750 kW within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or
  • second engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <1500 kW within the EEZ or
  • chief or second engineer on vessels with an outboard engine with unlimited propulsion power within the EEZ or
  • assistant under the direct supervision of a chief engineer or
  • worker in an engine room of a vessel <80 m long with propulsion power <3000 kW.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Online / Virtual Classrooms –

All of our classes are now online via our live interactive Virtual Classrooms.

These are run Monday to Friday starting at 0800 and finishing at 1600 for the course duration.

While we have allocated course durations for all courses, we may complete them sooner, depending on the group.

Your responsibility is to complete your assignments over the weekends and hand them in Monday mornings at 0800 before your written exams.

Written exams for the subjects you completed the week before will be on Monday morning. ONLY those who have submitted their assignments will be able to sit their exam.

As part of the maritime training package curriculum, each subject holds a practical component, and students must attend our Brisbane Campus to complete this. ECA Maritime College cannot issue a certificate without ALL components of the curriculum being satisfied; this includes the practical assessment.

ECA Maritime College offers the practical assessment and AMPA completion as a collaborative day; however, students choosing not to complete their AMPA with us will still need to satisfy the practical assessment component.

You can complete practicals offsite for Corporate Clients or groups of 8 or more, provided all the resources required have been audited and approved.

Remote / Flexible –

If you do not have time to attend classes, you can study remotely.

Once you have enrolled and processed your course fees, you will access your student portal. This is where all your course material will be located, including all your assignments and student handouts.

You can submit your assignments to your designated assessor and feedback received through the same system.

Remote students are given ten contact hours with their designated assessor to assist them through this process should they need it, and further assistance is available for students when necessary.

Once Remote students have completed all of their assignments, they will need to contact ECA Maritime College to organise a time to sit their written exams.

As part of the maritime training package curriculum, each subject holds a practical assessment component, and students must attend our Brisbane Campus to complete this.

We cannot issue a certificate without ALL components of the curriculum being satisfied; this includes the practical assessment. The AMPA and practical assessment are completed as a collaborative day; however, students choosing not to complete their AMPA with us will still need to satisfy the practical assessment component.

Master45M upgrade course

If you already have your Master <24M under the current training package, you may be eligible to apply for the upgrade course.  A copy of your course certificate will need to be provided before your enrolment can be processed and accepted.

This level of qualification is currently cited as meeting some of the requirements for certification as a Master up to 45 meters Near Coastal as defined by Marine Order 505 (Certificates of competency – National law) 2022.

Certification as a Master less than 45 meters Near Coastal (as defined by Marine Order 505) will require the achievement of the following;

MAR40320 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 45 meters Near Coastal),
certification as a Master less than 24 meters Near Coastal,
an appropriate radio certificate of proficiency,
Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) final assessment
and an AMSA approved the first-aid certificate.

People seeking certification should check with AMSA.

This qualification level is also cited as meeting some of the requirements for certification as a Mate less than 100 meters Near Coastal as defined by Marine Order 505 (Certificates of competency – national law) 2022.

Certification as a Mate, less than 100 meters Near Coastal, will require the achievement of
