In order to become a certified person who can steer a ship a person need to obtain a coxswain certificate. A coxswain course includes training on categories of vessel survey, operations areas, training on safety management systems, knowledge of survival at sea, knowledge of marine radio operations, lessons on manoeuvring a vessel and anchoring.

In addition to the basic training on how to steer a boat, coxswain training also includes training on boat safety which includes fight and extinguish fires training, basic knowledge of meteorology and tidal waves, vessel stability etc.
