Licensing/Regulatory Information

This qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certificate of competency as a Master up to 24 metres NC as specified in Marine Order 505.

AMSA certification of competency will require:

• achieving MAR30924 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 m Near Coastal) or MAR30924 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master Inland Waters),
• long range operator Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) issued by ACMA (or higher qualification),
• qualifying sea service as specified in Marine Order 505,
• meeting the medical fitness requirements as specified in Marine Order 505 and
• having passed final assessment as specified in Marine Order 505.

Seafarers seeking certification should check with AMSA.

PRE-REQUISITES

• Elements of Shipboard Safety
• Be at least 16 years when the certificate is issued;
• Record of Sea Service; (AMSA form 771) or
• Record of Sea Service to meet standard, signed by a qualified person;
• Declaration of Medical Fitness (AMSA form 559);
• Eyesight (Colour Vision) Test Certificate (AMSA form 542);
• Proof of Identity;
• Photographs (2);
• Certificate 3 – Master HLFTA unit of competency Apply first aid or another certificate that the national regulator considers equivalent;
• Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (LROCoP) issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority;
• Application for a Certificate of Competency – first time issue (AMSA form 426);
• Submit your entire application at an approved Australia post or via the new online portal, provide ID and pay AMSA fees.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency in the capacity of master on commercial vessels up to 24 m in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

DURATION

Classroom – 4.5 weeks

Remote / Flexible – 12 months from enrolment date Online – 12 months from enrolment date

COURSE STRUCTURE

ONLINE Classroom sessions – If you enrol in a classroom session this can be completed in a 4.5 week time frame, Monday to Friday 0800 – 1600 hours each day. Please be assured we do not move any quicker than the group can cope with, so while we have allocated 4 weeks (24 days) it may be completed sooner. You will be required to complete your assignments in the evening and work on Sundays to complete your course work.

After you enrol and pay your course fees you will be issued all the course material via an online portal. This is where you access all your resources, and assignments, complete and upload them for your assessor to mark and get your feedback.

You will need to attend the classes that have been scheduled, the same rules apply as attending a face to face class except this will be conducted via a virtual classroom and online.

All students will be assessed practically which can be completed at our Brisbane Office, offsite for Corporate Clients or groups of 8 or more, provided all the resources required have been audited and approved.

Remote / Flexible – If you do not wish to attend classes or you do not have the time to attend you can study remotely. Enrol and pay your course fees you will be issued all the course material via an online portal. This is where you access all your resources, and assignments, complete and upload them for your assessor to mark and give you feedback. When necessary you will be given direct access to your trainer to assist you through this process. All students will be assessed practically which can be completed at our Brisbane Office, offsite for Corporate Clients or groups of 8 or more, provided all the resources required have been audited and approved.

MARK008 Manoeuvre a vessel up to 24 metres within Near Coastal waters

MARN009 Perform seamanship operations on board a vessel up to 24 metres

Group A: Master up to 24 metres near coastal

MARH017 Use wheelhouse equipment for safe navigation

MARH037 Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 100 metres

Group B: Master inland waters

MARH014 Apply weather information when navigating inland waters as Master

Pre – Requisite ( While the following modules are a prerequisite you do not necessarily need to complete prior to enrolling, you will need to have these completed to be issued you full certificate and complete your course)

MARF028 Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel

MARF029 Meet work health and safety requirements

MARF060 Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment

 MARF030 Survive at sea using survival craft

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS There are no entry requirements for this course, however, to convert this certificate to a Marine Licence you must be 16 years of age when applying and meet all the Pre-Requisite checklist as per above.
