Elements of Shipboard Safety Training

Description

Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS) training is for people who wish to work on commercial vessels in Australian waters. The following units of competency are required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

    • MARF027 – Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
    • MARF028 – Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires onboard a vessel
    • MARF029 – Meet work health and safety requirements
    • MARF030 – Survive at sea using survival craft

PREREQUISITES CHECKLIST

  • Be at least 16 years when the certificate is issued

DURATION

A minimum of 8 hours of online training and theory component must be completed before attendance is allowed.

You must attend a practical day after completing all the online theory components. The practical day will start at Scarborough Marina – Coast Guard Building at 0800. During your practical day, you will need to complete a written exam on the content you have covered here.

ELEMENTS OF SHIPBOARD SAFETY CERTIFICATE ESS COURSE STRUCTURE

Practical Training Day – First part of the day will be firefighting, flare demonstrations, and onboard a vessel to see all the safety components of a commercially registered vessel. With the second half of the day in the swimming pool, bring a change of clothes as you must be fully clothed for the pool activity.

Please wear a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, and enclosed shoes.

What to bring

  • Sun protection 
  • Swimmers  
  • Towel 
  • Long-sleeved shirt & trousers 
  • Change of clothes
