This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency in the capacity of:
MED 3, 2, 1
chief engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <500 kW within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or
second engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <750 kW within the EEZ or
chief or second engineer on vessels with an outboard engine with unlimited propulsion power within the EEZ or
assistant under the direct supervision of a chief engineer or
worker in the engine room of vessels <80 m long with propulsion power <3000 kW.
Be at least 16 years when the certificate is issued
Record of Sea Service (AMSA form 560) or
Record of Sea Service to meet standard, signed by a qualified person;
Declaration of Medical Fitness for a Marine Qualification (AMSA form 558);
Eyesight test certificate (AMSA form 542);
Proof of Identity;
Certificate 2 Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 (NC) issued by an AMSA approved registered training organisation (RTO);
HLTFA unit of competency Apply first aid or another certificate that the national regulator considers to be equivalent;
Application for a Certificate of Competency – first-time issue (AMSA form 534);
Work effectively with others
Provide First Aid
Service marine internal combustion engines and propulsion and auxiliary systems
Complete engine room tasks
Maintain hull out of water
Operate and maintain extra low and low voltage electrical systems and equipment
Operate deck machinery
Operate marine internal combustion engines, and propulsion and auxiliary systems
Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
Meet work health and safety requirements
Survive at sea using survival craft
Follow environmental work practices
Online Classroom – 8 Days – provided you have the relevant sea time.
Remote / Flexible – 12 months from enrolment date
Online – 12 months from enrollment date
Online / Virtual Classrooms – These are run Monday to Friday 0800 – 1600 each day via zoom from anywhere in the world. After you enrol and pay your course fees you will be issued all the course material via an online portal. This is where you access all your resources, and assignments, complete and upload them for your assessor to mark and get your feedback. You will need to attend the classes that have been scheduled, the same rules apply as attending a face to face class except this will be conducted via a virtual classroom and online. All students will be assessed practically which can be completed at our Brisbane Office, offsite for Corporate Clients or groups of 8 or more, provided all the resources required have been audited and approved.
Remote / Flexible – If you do not wish to attend classes or you do not have the time to attend you can study remotely. Enrol and pay your course fees you will be issued all the course material via an online portal. This is where you access all your resources, and assignments, complete and upload them for your assessor to mark and give you feedback. When necessary you will be given direct access to your trainer to assist you through this process. All students will be assessed practically which can be completed at our Brisbane Office, offsite for Corporate Clients or groups of 8 or more, provided all the resources required have been audited and approved.
