Commercial Licenses – Certificate Of Safety Training & ESS
This level of qualification is currently cited as meeting some of the requirements for certification as a Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal as defined by the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D. Certification will require achievement of the MAR20313 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal), qualifying sea service and completed Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved task book or qualifying sea service, AMSA final assessment, an appropriate radio certificate of proficiency and an AMSA approved first aid certificate; people seeking certification should check with AMSA.
Elements of Shipboard Safety: To complete the full Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain) qualification students are required to complete the Elements of Shipboard Safety units. Students who have completed Elements of Shipboard Safety in the past 5 years will not have to repeat this course, you will have to provide a copy of your certificate.
The Coxswain (Grade I NC) Certificate of Competency allows a Mariner who wish to command a commercial vessel up to 12 metres in length, operating no more than 15 nautical miles to sea, with a diesel engine capacity of <500 kW (670hp) and may be carrying passengers.
Classroom – 2 weeks
Remote / Flexible – 12 months from enrollment date
Online – 12 months from enrollment date
Classroom Sessions – If you enrol in a classroom session this can be completed in a 2 week time frame, we start at 7am and work on Saturdays. Please be assured we do not move any quicker that the group can cope with, so while we have allocated 2 weeks (12 days) it may be completed sooner. You will be required to complete your assignments in the evening and work on Sundays to complete you course work.
Remote / Flexible – If you do not wish to attend classes or you do not have the time to attend you can study remotely. When you enrol and pay your course fees you will be issued all the course material and access to training resources and trainers to assist you through this process. All students will be assessed practically and this can be done at either of our Campus’s Cairns or Brisbane.
Online – We have virtual classrooms and these sessions can be accessed from anywhere in the world, they are live and interactive. All sessions are recorded for those who are unable to attend
MARB002 Perform basic servicing and maintenance of main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems

MARH001 Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 12 metres
MARI001 Comply with regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres
MARJ001 Follow environmental work practices
MARK001 Handle a vessel up to 12 metres
MARN002 Apply seamanship skills aboard a vessel up to 12 metres
Pre – Requisite ( While the following modules are a prerequisite you do not necessarily need to complete prior to enrolling, you will need to have these completed to be issued you full certificate and complete your course)
MARF001 Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
MARF002 Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
MARF004 Meet work health and safety requirements
MARF005 Survive at sea using survival craft
There are no entry requirements for this course, however to convert this certificate to a Marine Licence you must be 16 years of age when applying and meet all the Pre-Requisite checklist as per above.
